Unexpected drug reactions land thousands of older patients in hospitals every year

Looking at a sample of 678 patients over age 65 admitted to hospitals under the care of Veterans Affairs (VA) between October 2003 and 2006, researchers estimated that 10 percent of the group's unplanned hospital stays were due to an unexpected drug reaction. Of those, almost 37 percent might have been prevented.

The story about the research into stem cells was fascinating.and hilarious, the way Streisand told it. Who knew that male stem cells are as direction-challenged as the men in our lives! But mostly, this was a serious -- and illuminating -- speech.

In a study of 91 patient-caregiver pairs, a patient's physical and mental quality of life scores were lowest when both the patient and his or her caregiver were depressed (P 0.05), according to Misook Chung, PhD, RN, of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

The next lowest scores occurred when only the patient was depressed, she reported at the Heart Failure Society of America meeting here.

In this study, nearly three-quarters of the caregivers were spouses, and 76% of them were women.

From the caregiver's perspective, quality of life scores were similarly low when both the patient and the caregiver were depressed and when the caregiver was the only one who was depressed.

The study is the first randomized U.S. trial of stem cells for chronic angina, as research has focused more on the acute heart attack setting.

ILL-ADVISED AND UNNEEDED STENT OPERATIONS FINALLY DECLINING - A SMALL VICTORY FOR PATIENTS OVER UNETHICAL MEDICAL PROFITEERS

A marked decline in the rate of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery led the way to a 15% overall decline in coronary revascularization procedures from 2001 to 2008, a nationwide survey showed.

The annual rate of CABG declined by almost 40%, whereas the rate of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) held steady during the study period, as reported in the May 4 issue of JAMA.

"Our findings suggest the possibility that several thousand patients who underwent PCI in 2008 would have undergone CABG surgery had patterns of care not changed markedly between 2001 and 2008," Andrew J. Epstein, PhD, of the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and co-authors wrote.

PATTERSON - In July 2007, Quentin Murray, then 4, was diagnosed with leukemia.

His parents, Mary Webb and Corwin Murray, finally had an answer for Quentin's puzzling symptoms - and they also had new challenges to face.

Webb was several months pregnant at the time with her second child - the baby girl would be a surprise blessing for the couple.

Webb said she remembered that after one of the last doctor's visits before Quentin's diagnosis, the pediatrician herself carried Quentin to the car.

His legs were hurting, and Webb, being pregnant, was unable to carry him.

Then, in December 2007, Quentin's little sister, Jory, was born - and everything changed for Quentin.

(Reuters Health) - People who drink regularly, especially heavy drinkers, may be more likely than teetotalers to suffer the common heart-rhythm disturbance atrial fibrillation, a new research review suggests.

In an analysis of 14 past studies, researchers found that the heaviest drinkers were more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation than people who drank little to no alcohol.

The studies differed in how they defined "heavy" drinking. At a minimum it meant two or more drinks per day for men, and one or more per day for women; in some studies, heavy drinkers downed at least six drinks per day.

People who want to significantly reduce their risk of dying from ischemic heart disease may do well to greatly increase their daily intake of fruits and vegetables, a large prospective European study suggests.

Heart Patients average more prescriptions that most all patients in our medical system. So the question becomes "How can we sell the suckers even more drugs at top dollar when every facet of cardiology is already covered, often duplicated?" Simple, just add a non-cardiac disease, get a bribed whore or two to create a "study," and sell them even more prescriptions.
