Adult stem cells take New York woman from death’s door to dance floor July 31, 2007

BANGKOK, Thailand, 31 July 2007 – An infection from a root canal treatment nearly destroyed the life of Ann Bonarelli, a New York native. From a healthy, active life she got to the point where she could not breathe as the infection settled in her heart. Her valve stopped working and her heart began to fail.

Her doctors initially thought she had pneumonia but discovered the real problem and rushed her to have an urgent valve repair. She spent the following months in a state of constant tiredness and grew sick of being tired all the time.

Today, four months later, Ann feels as well as she did before she got ill. She can dance and swim and her future looks very bright. Her cardiologist cannot believe how well she is and sees her progress as, ‘the future of medicine’. Her Ejection Fraction (a clinical measure of the heart’s pumping efficiency) has risen dramatically from 17-27% to 45% and she only has to stop her treadmill exercises when her legs give out – not her heart.
